About project

In the period from 2013 to 2015, under the auspices of EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria), which the Wrocław ZOO is a member of, a Pole-to-Pole campaign was carried out, which focused on the issues of polar areas. The campaign addressed climate change, exploitation of polar areas, and protection of related species. The flag species which represented the Arctic and Antarctic included: polar bear, Arctic wolf, narwhal, reindeer, snowy owl and krill, crabeater seal, emperor penguin, leopard seal, and light-mantled albatross.

The Wrocław ZOO joined the campaign by preparing a project entitled "Pole to Pole Campaign" and by obtaining funds for its completion from EEA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway - to the amount of PLN 2,967,311.75. The full name of the project is: "Ecological education in the scope of protecting biodiversity in the face of climate change, performed in line with the mission of the Wrocław ZOO."

The project included the creation of a multi-media pavilion "CLIMATE, ANIMALS, HUMANS", which opened in December 2015. Also, an educational workshop for children and youth was planned (click here for more information) as well as an information campaign concerning climate risks and ways to prevent them.
